When I landed my first job at a magazine, my editor told me the trick to good writing is to "get lost, but carry a good map." Since then I've immersed myself in topics as diverse as Federal Indian Law and the history of plastic lawn flamingos. But no matter where my research has taken me, I've always remembered to leave myself a trail of bread-crumbs back to the real world so I'll know how to guide my readers to the strange, dramatic, and often improbable worlds I've discovered while "lost."
I started my career in 2007 as a staff writer and editor for Yankee Magazine, a New England regional publication with approximately 250,000 subscribers. During my time there I wrote everything from long-form narrative features to 200 word department articles. I worked on a number of ancillary and custom publishing projects, including a quarterly newsletter and the New Hampshire state tourism guide. I also helped pioneer the magazine's online multimedia strategy, producing numerous videos, podcasts, slideshows, and blog entries.
My profile "The Memory Keeper" was a finalist for Best Profile at the City and Regional Magazine Awards in 2011, and my video work led to Best Multimedia nominations for the magazine in 2009 and 2010.
In 2011 I left Yankee Magazine and moved to the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands where my wife participated in a federally-funded program to bring medical providers to under-served communities. While on island I have continued to produce freelance articles for Yankee as a contributing editor, and I split the remainder of my time working for one of the local papers and on an organic farm.
As a reporter for the Virgin Islands Source, an entirely online daily newspaper, I covered a wide range of topics, from government meetings and labor protests to parades and mango eating competitions. I used this opportunity to develop my photography skills as well, producing all of the art for my stories and becoming fluent in photo editing software. More importantly, the experience taught me to be a more concise and nimble writer, able to digest lengthy territorial senate hearings into short, accurate articles before the evening print deadline.
My family and I have recently finished relocating back to western Massachusetts and I'm eager to start telling new stories about this region I hold dear. I am actively seeking staff or freelance work at any print or digital publication that values narrative journalism. On this website you'll find a selection of my favorite articles, photographs, and videos. Please review my portfolio and if you have any questions regarding my work, do not hesitate to contact me.
